EBM: Lesson 3 Homework

  • Answer the following questions about the patient case you would like to use for your final presentation. You may use the patient case you talked about in class today or choose a different patient case. Be prepared to tell us about this patient at the beginning of the next class. (Hint: write your responses in English so that you will begin thinking about your patient in English)

    1.  What was the chief complaint at the first presentation? (e.g. chest pain, rash, sore throat, etc.)

    2. Where did the patient present?

    3. What was the history of present illness? What other symptoms or complaints did the patient have on presentation ?

    4. What was the patient’s relevant past medical history? (relevant medical history means what other medical problems they had or currently have that may be important to their current problem)

  • Consider what topic you might want to present on for your presentation. Keep in mind that you will need to find quality research related to the topic you choose. Could one of the patients that you thought of serve as a case study for the topic you would like to choose?

  • Watch the following video on how to search for articles using Pubmed:

  • Using PubMed, find 1-2 articles on the topic you have chosen for your presentation. Search first for meta-analyses, then randomized-controlled trials, and finally search other types of articles if you cannot find meta-analyses or randomized-controlled trials on your topic. Finally, only choose articles that have “free full access”. Email the articles you’ve found to your professor at least the day before next class.
